« s Burgesses’ Requests. The needs of Riccarton and Sockburn residents were ventilated at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council last night, when a letter from the Riccarton and Sockburn Burgesses’ Association was received. The request that a light at Norton’s Road be altered was referred x o the electrical engineer and Mr Cross. It was asked that a stock-proof fence be erected round the Middleton pit. Mr Gardner said that sheep at present were passing the pit by the thousand, and the owners had a genuine £ause for complaint. It was no ordinary pit, and if the sheep were hurt and jagged it was a bad thing. It was agreed that the members of the ridings concerned (Messrs Newnham, Cross and Gardner) inspect the pit and be given power to act.

The same committee was given similar instructions regarding Boulton’s and Boon’s Roads. The burgesses complained that a river had formed in these roads. The foreman said that it had originally been intended to pipe the road, but it was found that an open crossing would be best. A complaint was received regarding the north side of the road near the Upper Riccarton post office, also in respect to the newly formed footpath on the north side of Yaldhurst Road. It was stated that the path had been used for the purpose of exercising racehorses. Mr Gardner said that something should be done. Could not the inspector be put on to watch? The foreman said that screenings could be put where there w*ere houses. It was left to the members of the riding to take action.

Exception was taken by the burgesses to willow trees on Waimairi Road. Mr Cross said that the objection was trivial, as the branchea complained of were but twigs, and could be cut with a pocket-knife. In regard to a request for the cost of sealing footpaths, it was decided to supply the information.
