COUNCIL SALARY CUT WILL SAVE CITY £2384.
The reductions in the salaries of the higher paid officers of the City Council, which were agreed upon at Monday night’s meeting of the council, will result in a total saving of £2384 2s 8d a year, according to figures prepared by the City Treasurer (Mr J. W. Niven). During the discussion, it was stated that the saving would enable an addit®>nal twenty-six men to be given permanent employment. On the basis of the award rate of wages, it will be possible to employ about fourteen extra men. Notice of motion has been given by Councillor Archer to rescind the resolution providing for the graduated scale of reductions, and the matter will again be discussed at the next meeting of the council. The Labour members are determined to use every endeavour to have the reductions modified.
