Mothering Sunday, which was founded by Miss Penswick Smith, of Nottingham, England, in honour of motherhood, was observed at St Stephen’s Church, Shirley, yesterday, when special addresses were given by the vicar, the Rev J. R. Hervey, and a procession of children and parishioners was held in the morning. At both the morning and evening services, a special message addressed to the parishioners by Miss Penswick Smith, was read by the vicar. The procession was impressive, over two..hundred children and about sixty adult parishioners taking part. Headed by Derry’s Band and the robed choir, the procession moved off from the parish hall at 10.15 and followed a route along Hill’s Road, Edgeware Road, Bealev Street, Gresford Street and back along Hill’s Road to the church for the eleven o’clock service. The churct was crowded for both the morning and evening services.
