SALMON FISHING OVER WEEK-END WAS POOR.
Despite the fact that dozens of salmon fishermen tried their luck yesterday, very few fish were caught The Waimakariri, near the mouth, was dotted with boats, and further up the banks were fined with anglers. Not more than a dozen quinnat were caught. The Rangitata and Rakaia were unfishable, and the Hurunui yielded only a few fish. There has not vet been a good run of salmon in the Waimakariri this season, but there is still a chance of good sport being obtained there. I-ast year there were fairly good runs from March 8 onwards; the best run :.f the season took place on March 29. Small lots .have been seen in both the Rakaia and Rangitata, but these rivers are at present unfishable.
Fir-fishing is still improving, - and some good catches are reported front the Selwyn. The fish there are now rising well, and all anglers who fished over the week-end caught something.
