CROPS FAIL TO FILL OUT, OWING TO WEATHER

The rainfall at Kirwee for the month of December was 1.38 in, which was recorded on seven days, the maximum fall being .47in, on the 14th. For the corresponding month of 1929 the fall was 3.43 in, which fell on fifteen davs The total fall for the year was 28.23 in. which fell of 111 days. The total for 1929 was 30.48 in, which fell on 108 days The weather recently has been very hot and dry with almost continuous nor’-westers blowing. This has been very favourable weather for the holidays, but it is playing havoc with the pastures and the cereal crops. The latter are not filling out as they should, owing to the lack of moisture. It is to be hoped that a good rainfall will very shortly follow these winds. Some grass-seed has been reaped, but it will probably be on the light side owing to the winds. There appears to be a fair amount of cocksfoot on the roads. There are some good crops of white clover, especially in the Courtenay district, along the banks of the Waimakariri River. Some oats have already been cut, but with the exception of a few early crops, it will be a week or two before harvesting becomes general.
