GOODS TRAFFIC RISING TO PEAK.

FREEZING WORKS’ OUTPUT STEADILY ON INCREASE,

Due mainly to the operations of the freezing works in North Canterbury, goods traffic through the Railway Department at Christchurch is increasing. It was reported this morning that a fair amount of stock was being moved to the freezing works, and to Addingi ton. Loading for Lyttelton and export was heavy, the output from the freezing works having increased considerably during the past week. Harvest operations, which had commenced in most parts of Canterbury, would shortly result in a high-pressure demand on goods waggons, but the Department were ready to meet the peak rush. In regard to inward goods, it was reported that matters were fairly quiet, cargo from overseas being comparatively small in quantity. The principal item during the past fefa days was a cargo of fruit brought by the Government vessel Maui Pomare. Consignments from ttys vessel were forwarded to most local stations, and also f° Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin and Invercargill. Goods traffic from the West Coast was reported to be down, consignments of timber and coa] having decreased during the recent holiday period.
