STAND-BY PLANT FOR CANTERBURY.

FIRST TWO ENGINES DUE TO ARRIVE THIS MONTH. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, January 5. Excellent progress is being made with the provision of the Diesel electric stand-by plant for Canterbury. The first two Diesel engines are due to arrive in New Zealand from England at the middle of this month, and the other two a fortnight later. Two generators will reach Lyttelton on April 23, and the remainder one month later, these being the contract guarantee dates. No unexpected difficulties arose in securing the machinery foundations on the Lyttelton site behind the graving dock. On. the contrary, ground was found exactly at the depth to which it was planned to place the concrete. Provision is being made in the building for the ultimate erection of the two engines and generators now being used in the Penrose station, Auckland, but the latter will not be transferred until the Arapuni hydro scheme is again in full working order and there is no risk of power shortages in the north.
