ANNUAL REPORT OF SURF ASSOCIATION.

“Patrolmen were appointed during last Christmas holidays on the North, New Brighton and Sumner beaches, and the number of rescues effected proved without doubt that patrolmen are an absolute necessity,” states the annual report of the Canterbury Surf and Life Saving Association. “Unfortunately, the Christchurch public have been sadly lacking in practical sympathy towards beach patrols, and, unless some guarantee is forthcoming that the necessary funds will be provided to maintain three patrolmen for at least eight weeks during the coming season, the association •will have to consider very seriously Whether it is worth while carrying on with the scheme. “During the year the association conducted eleven inter-club events, and clubs are to be congratulated on the high standard of surf life-saving attained by their teams. All clubs have been under heavy expenditure in maintaining their equipment and keeping their pavilions in repair. The whole of the buildings and plant are a credit to club members, whose desire, it is to safeguard the beaches under their care.” There had been a substantial increase in the number of surf awards during the year, states the report, and it was hoped thafc as many club members as possible would qualify for the awards. The financial statement showed the association to have a credit balance of £123 3s lid.
