REVIEW OF WORK IN ASHBURTON.
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOLDS ANNUAL MEETING The seventh annual meeting of the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce was held in the A. and P. Rooms last evening. The president, Mr 11. L. Barker, was in the chair. The following officers were elected: President, Mr F. W. Sheldon": vicepresident, Mr A. A. M’Donald; council. Messrs T. T. liarle, E. W. M. Cole, E. C. Rawnsley, W. A. Fleming, J. W. Bowden, M. Bruce, E. Buchanan,. J. S. Laing, 11. M. Jones, Andrew Lane, FI. B. Hefford: sectional committees: Exporters and manufacturers. Messrs A. Lane, E. Buchanan, L. R. Clarke, E. F. Nicoll; retailers, Messrs A. P. Raven, G. Hefford, 11. M. Jones, E. 11. Orr; produce, Messrs A. A. M’Donald, E. C. Rawnsley, A. Brown, James Carr; finance, Messrs T. G. A. Flarle, E. C. Rawnsley, W. A. Fleming; railway advisory, Messrs R- Houston, A. A. M’Donald, C. IT. S. Clarkson, V. Russell, 11. G. Kemp; auditor, Mr M. Bruce. The president was appointed to represent the Chamber at the official welcome to the aviator, Mr Oscar Garden, at the Ashburton airport on Tuesday next. It was agreed to invite the General Manager of Railways, Mr Sterling, to deliver an address to members and others interested. Mr Laing brought up the question of an improved mail service on Wednesdays and Fridays, when the mail did not reach Ashburton until two o’clock in the afternoon. It was decided to approach the department concerned in an endeavour to have the mails from the north on those days dispatched by the early morning goods train, which at present leaves Christchurch before the arrival of the ferry steamer Reference was made to the support given by the Chamber’s delegates at Mount Cook Hermitage in regard to the sliding scale of wheat prices, without which it was considered Canterbury would be in a bad way. The council was urged to give this matter their earnest consideration and support, and to take firm steps if there was any likelihood of the scale being tampered with. •
