A New Standard.

To the Editor. Dear Sir,—ln the 44 Bulletin ”of October 22 this heading appears, which is well worth reading, as it is a good statement upon the subject and leads one away from the old fixed ideas that gold is paramount. Being only one product of human energy, why should it rule everything with a power that everyone has to bow down to ? It is the man, not metal, that should rule. He du* the gold from the earth and thus made the image to rule over him. Away with it, cast it down. Place human energy before metal. A new standard —yes, an equitable standard, based on human energy. We must have a fixed unit of value as we have a fixed measure of distance. Therefore, we will take gold, silver, paper, the pound sterling, and the daily wage of the average man, and make these all of equal value. Say we fix the daily or basic wage at 12s a day for the average man, we would then have a strong combination, which would in time build up a better feeling between countries and nations, so that business would be con* ducted on a surer foundation than at the present time.—l am, etc., J. WELD.
