Who Are Spiritualists?

To the Editor. Dear Sir, —May I thank Mr Trolove for his interesting and courteous reply to my letter? There are, however, several point# which Mr Trolove did not answer. Why did he overlook my remarks about the obese lady medium whose only manifestation (?) of spiritual communication took the form of saying “ Gaga—”? Truly, as Mr Trolove admits, mediums are weird people! May I ask, Mr Trolove, what Royalties are Spiritualists? I know there is a cherished fable among Spiritualists about Queen Victoria being one—but that lady’s excellent ability to handle affairs of State—and to bring up, very successfully, a large family—gives the lie to that. Mr Trolove says that spiritualism is serious, even sacred. May I refer him to “ The Intruder,” written by H. Montague Crane? The author of this story gives his assurance that it is based on fact. In it we find an evil spirit taking possession of the hero'# body and endeavouring—when he was not craftily laughing “ Te! He! ” at all and sundry—to commit assault and murder! Serious IF it’s true, but certainly far from sacred. I thank Mr Trolove for his compliment and I trust we shall both be spared for many a year to enliven the correspondence column of the “ Star ” —but I do most heartily wish that Spiritualism, with its attendant evils and trickery could be suppressed and stamped out. Far be it from mm to interfere _ with anyone’s beliefs—but Spiritualism is riot a belief. It is a scourg# and should be treated as such. Now, Mr Trolove, it’s your round. Spring to it!—l am, etc., MATERIALIST.
