HIGH HOPES
A CLAIM that will give an ounce -** of gold to a panful of sand might easily disembarrass Australia financially, and it will be interesting to see what comes of the latest reported discoveries in different parts of Australia. The gold won in Australia since 1851 reaches the almost unbelievable total of £625,908,530, and has contributed to the prosperity of the country and its financial reprieve in crises almost as serious as that which the country is now facing. Gold is wealth, for it is currency that will pay off debts or meet other obligations, and if there is any truth in the reported strikes in Northern Australia and at Yass the country will benefit by it. The tragic jlart of it, however, is that there is no permanency in national prosperity that is artificially created by gold discoveries.
