NEGLECTED TO SEND INCOME TAX RETURNS.
Four defendants were each convicted and fined £2 and costs in the Magistrate's Court this morning by Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., for failure to furnish income tax returns. They were William Schneideman, Frederick Frank James Trent, Leonard Treleaven (Mr Sargent) and Charles Edward Yates. Mr Brown, who appeared for the Department. said that the four informations had been issued after there had been a number of others convicted. Those cases had been given a fair amount of publicity, but still there were some who had neglected their returns. In none of the four cases said Mr Brown, was there any suggestion of evasion. It was merely a matter of neglect. The Department had now adopted the practice of attaching notices in bold type on the notices sent to defaulters stating that thev- were liable to prosecution. The Magistrate: I think the penalt\” I will fix will obviate a recurrence of the offence.
