How Many Inspectors?
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —Within the past two or threa days two prominent men—one Mr W. Hayward, chairman of the Tramway Board, and the other Mr Thurston, a Labour aspirant to membership of that body, have made flatly contradictory statements about the number of inspectors employed by the board. Mr Hayward stated last week that there were only four, but that they were great travellers. Addressing ratepayers on Saturday night Mr Thurston stated that there were sixteen. One statement must, of course, be untenable, and while there is an element of humour in that situation, it becomes of serious consequence if it is an indication of the general accuracy of whichever of the two men referred to is in ths wrong. Any man may be moused of a bias in favour of his own beliefs, but the people of Christchurch do not want on the Tramway Board capable of distorting facts for his own ends either deliberately or through carelessness. The tramway elections are almost upon us, and I am sorry that before I cast my vote it will probably not be possible for me to discover whether sixteen or four represents the number of inspectors in the board s employ. I am, etc., ALr.l3.
