To the Editor. Dear Sir—l will reply to “Materialist's" letter from bottom up. Yes, I try to make my letters interesting—the editor treats them exceptionally well— correcting the spelling, and straightening out the grammar the “printers’ devil’’ sometimes slips me up. I never used “X ken” (I am not Scotch) in my last letter —the word was “then.* . “So much to be done here,’’ says Materialist.’’ “Why does P.T. bother about a nonexistent world?” Because I think it does exist, and I will be well repaid gaining knowledge about it; so I hope to have less to readjust when I go hence. I have come to the pension age, but I have not been an idler. Spiritualists are drawn from all classes, from Royalty downwards—many have to remain sub rosa. I noticed the picture of an eminent one in the ‘Star last evening—ball punching—Sir Oliver Lodge. It is risky to make sweeping general statements about my sect or section of humanity. A successful trumpet seance, or materialising seance far surpasses any play. These demonstrations of spirit return are going to affect the thought and progress of the world to an increasing extent. W. fc.. Gladstone said that psychic science was the most important thing. “Mediums are weird people. \Y ell, they are often highly strung, hair-trigger folk, but you find all sorts and conditions. Some dav we will care for our mediums, as the Greeks did, and family seances may become as common as wireless. Mediums are bom so, and their gifts can be developed, or atrophied by neglect, or spoilt by misuse. If the editor did not know that I was serious, do you think he would allow me the space he does? The thought that I am being “strung on” by the spooks or by anybody embodied does not enter into my calculations at all; and I hold it tar too serious (sacred even) that I should attempt to “string people on.” Many have said to me: “The subject did not interest me till I started to read your letters.” If I have led any astray, I shall have to make good— I am fully alive to my responsibility. Thank you, “Materialist,” for your favourable opinion as to my ability. I can assure you it is not being wasted in “psychic meandering.” Don’t you agree with me that we help to enliven the cor-col of the “Star.’* and perhaps help some to arrive at a rational understanding of his life, and its correlation with the rest? PETER TROLOY’E.
