PLAY AIDS ST ANDREWS FREE KINDERGARTEN.

To augment the funds of the St Andrew’s Free Kindergarten, a play was given in the St Andrew’s schoolroom last evening *by the younger members of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. There was a good attendance and the performers’ efforts met with appreciative applause. The standard shown by those who took the various parts was good and gave evidence of careful preparation. Christchurch Kindergarten. The November meeting of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten was held recently at the Y.M.C.A. Mrs J. R. Evans presided, in the absence of the president, Mrs 11. T. J. Thacker. Other members present were: Mesdames T. E. Taylor, Hamlin, Rodda, Peverill, Pyne, Marshall, Retallick, Aitken, Jarden, Bellamy, Coddington, Miss M’llraith and the secretary. The final meeting of the year was fixed for Wednesday, December 17. It was decided that each school should hold its Christmas tree on whatever day was suitable to their committee, but that the schools would remain open until Friday, December 19. [Mrs Taylor reported that during her recent visit to Invercargill she had visited the three kindergartens in that city. Two were in charge of teachers trained in Christchurch schools. A new kindergarten was in the course of there, and it was expected that this would be opened early next year. The following subscriptions were handed inPhillipstown £lB 2s, Richmond £2 5s 9~d, Sydenham £lO quota, £lO reserve, Linwood £5, Selwyn £7, New Brighton £7 10s, Sunbeam £ll 10s 9d. The school reports for the month showed that the attendance had been very good. A number of new children had been admitted. The roll numbers were: Sunbeam 52, Phillipstown 70 Sydenham 73, Selwyn 53, Richmond 53 Linwood 45, New Brighton 44. The Sunbeam and Phillipstown Kindergartens had each celebrated their nineteenth birthdays during the month, when parties were given for the children. On both of these occasions there was a good attendance of parents and friends. Mies Hull gave interesting talks to the mothers and members of the committees at Phillipstown, Sydenham and Selwyn respectively. The mothers and teachers at Sydenham held a jumble sale on October 31, as a result of which they were able to hand in £lO to the committee. A successful coin afternoon was held at Selwyn, at which the children gave a programme of nursery rhymes. The New Brighton Committee had arranged a successful children’s fancy dress party and carnival dance. Visitors during the month were Miss Andrews, Mesdames Dunbier, Wyatt Jarden, Stewart, Mr and Mrs G. Taylor’ Mrs and Miss Armstrong, Mesdames Glen, Montgomery and Rundle.
