FAILED TO SUPPLY REQUIRED RETURNS
DEFENDANT FINED £2 FOR BREACH OF ACT. George Campbell and Co., a firm of coachbuilders (Mr Simes) were fined £2 and costs in the Magistrate's Court this morning for failing to supply particulars required by the Census and Statistics Act, 1910. Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., was on the bench. Mr R. T. Bailey, who appeared for the Department, said that he had been instructed to draw attention to the annoyance and inconvenience caused to the Department through the holding up of returns of this kind. A few overdue return's would delay the whole of the statistical work. The maximum fine was £SO, and £1 a day for every day over the prescribed time. 1 The Magistrate said it was the first case of its kind he had dealt with for seven years. It was not a serious breach.
