An unusual variety of subjects ioffered for selection by those who are interested in the annual competitions for the Christmas Number of tlia “ Christchurch Star.” In the literary section, there are half a dozen subjects of topical interest to ( choose from, the object being to appeal to both sexes in a field in which common experience rather than mere literary ability will be a guarantee cf succe.ssi , . In the photographic competitions a new class has been provided for old photographs such as appear from tune to time in the Old Colonist Pages of Saturday’s issue. Here, again, any reader of the “Star,” whether interested in photography or not, may wio a substantial prize. The competitions are as follows: PHOTOGRAPHIC. Any Subject. First Prize £3 Second Prize £* Animal or Bird Study. First Prize £2 Second Prize £* Fifty Years Ago. First Prize £2 Second Prize £*• Any photograph fifty years old, or older, preferably in New Zealand, of any subject of old time interest something from an old album, such as an immigrant ship, a family or wedding group, a portrait, an old house, church or store, old fashions, the photograph to be accompanied preferably with notes. LITERARY. Select any of the following subjects for an article not exceeding 500 words:— How to make your child love you. What has a motor-car meant to me.'* How to make a pal of your boy? In what ways has freedom brought happiness to women? What controls women’s fashions r What features are transient? What is the finest sport, and why? Six prizes of a guinea each will be offered, but there will not necessarily be a prize for each subject. CHILDREN’S CLASSES. Seniors. (Over twelve years and under eighteen.) Best drawing (Indian ink). Subject: “ Father Christmas Arrivesby Air.” Prizes: 10s and ss. Best Christmas story not over 600 words. Any topic. Prizes: 10s and Juniors. (Under twelve years.)
