The Hon D. Buddo, M.L.C., was a passenger from the north by this morning’s ferry steamer. Colonel the Hon G. J. Smith, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington this morning. The Hon G. Witty, M.L.C., was a passenger from the north this morning. Mr and Mrs Cyril Ward, who have been visiting the Rt Hon Sir Joseph Ward, in Wellington, returned to Christchurch this morning. Dr J. Hight arrived from the north this morning. Mr H. C. Holland, M.Sc., of the Wooiston Tanneries, Ltd., has been elected an Associate of the Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain and Ireland. Mr E. A. James, of Wellington, formerly Dominion secretary of the Reform League, has been confined to his room for the past month. At the annual meeting of the Nelson Provincial Progress League, Mr A. Gould was re-elected president and Mr F. G. Gibbs vice-president After twenty-five years’ absence from the Dominion, Mr Walter Burnet, eldest son of Mr and Mrs T. J. Burnet, Woodend, is visiting his parents. Mr Burnet, who arrived in Wellington by the Tamaroa on Wednesday, is Assistatn Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University. During the greater part of the war he was wireless instructor at some of the principal centres in the Old Country. He was for some years employed with the engineering firm of Vickers, Son and Maxim—latterly Vickers, Ltd. Mr George Harper recently retired from the firm of Messrs Harper, Pascoe, Buchanan and Upham, solicitors. About thirty years ago Mr Harper/took into partnership Mr Guy Pascoe, founding the firm. Later, Mr E. T. Harper joined, and after his death at the war, Mr G. D. Buchanan also became a member, Mr J. H. Upham being the last of the principals to enter the business. Although he has retired from the firm, Mr Harper retains the best of health, and his wonted activity is not t impaired. He has been in practice as a solicitor for the past sixty years. To-morrow, St Peter’s Day, will be the silver jubilee of the ordination to the priesthood of the Rev E. C. W. Powell and the Rev N. S. Barnett, now vicar of Berhampore, Wellington, who were ordained by the Bishop of Nelson, in the Cathedral, Nelson, on St Peter’s- Day, 1905. After serving six years as vicar of Amuri, Mr Powell was appointed assistantpriest at Merivale. From there he went to Methven, and in 1916 he joined the N.Z.E.F. and had two years and a half as chaplain. At the termination of the war Mr Powell was appointed vicar of Sumner, which cure he has just left to become vicar of St Saviour’s, Sydenham. After service in Nelson and Christchurch dioceses, the Rev N. S. Barnett moved to Wellington, where he became vicar of Otaki, Lower Hutt, and then his present parish of Berhampore.
