Lorry Driver Hit By Train.

REMARKABLE ESCAPE AT TE KUITI CROSSING. Per Press Association. TE KUITI. June 28. A miraculous escape from death was experienced by a young man named Fred Martin, of Te Waiter©, whose lorry was struck by a train at a crossing here last evening. Martin was thrown ten yards along the railway track and escaped with only severe bruises and shock. The lorry was almost a complete wreck. Another man, H. Tuohey, a passenger on the train, a resident of Puketutu, received injuries and a severe shaking as a result of falling into a viaduct upon which the train had pulled up. Tuohey stepped off thinking that he was on sound ground and fell 20 feet. Martin’s injuries comprised only severe bruises and shock. Tuohey suffered injury to his back. Both are in hospital. EXPRESS TRAIN RUNS INTO LARGE BOULDER. Per Press Association. TE KUITI, June 28. The north-bound express, which passes through Te Kuiti at 2.40 am., ran into a large boulder on the side of the track three miles south of Te Kuiti this morning, resulting in damage to the engine, two cars and the postal van. The undergear of the engine was damaged. Steps and a battery box were torn off one car, and the steps and undergear of the other car The van was only slightly damaged. The express was delayed for two and a quarter hours. The Limited express was also delayed for one hour and a quarter while the track was being cleared. There were no casualties.
