HOME TALKIES WILL BE HEARD IN CHRISTCHURCH
novel apparatus TO BE DEMONSTRATED HERE NEXT MONTH. Enter the home talkies. Within a year, the talkies have become an established part of the entertainment business in New Zealand. Now, they are to be offered in doses suitable for home consumption. Next month will see the arrival of the apparatus in* Christchurch. This invention combines the home cinematograph, the gramophone and the radio set. For those who own a radio set, the new projecting apparatus is 'all that is necessary. The apparatus will be given public demonstrations in Christchurch at Edison Hall. It is extremely compact and its price will be comparatively moderate. The plant is simple in operation. It comprises a home projector into which is built a gramophone turntable. These are synchronised by accurate gears and the electric pick-up from the turntable is plugged into the radio set in the same manner as is the pick-up from an electric gramophone, making use of the audio side of the set and the loud-speaker. A volume control is fitted so that the voices can be made as natural as possible. Those who have seen and heard the plant declare it to be equal to the finest theatre installations. It is probable that in order to make the operating of these plants cheap and popular, a library of films will be maintained in Christchurch, so that those who purchase the apparatus can hire an ever-changing series of films for use in their homes. The films are released monthly from the manufacturers, and the latest list includes films of “Laugh, Clown, Laugh,” in which the singer appears in costume, “Indian Love Call,” in native dress, “When You and I Were Young, Maggie,” and a comedy incorporating that well known monologue, “Cohen at the Telephone.” Other recent releases include dancing and patter numbers and some of the latest foxtrots. For those who do not have radio sets in their homes, the manufacturers have provided an amplifying unit which is remarkably efficient. This incorporates a modern loud-speaker of the dynamic type.
