marist league team BEATS SOUTH SYDNEY.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 12. The Rugby League match between Marist and South Sydney, played at Carlaw Park to-day, resulted in a win for Marist by 10 points to 9. For Marist Gregory scored two tries, converted one and kicked a penalty goal. For South Sydney Wearing and Quinlivan kicked penalty goals, and Why scored a try which Blair converted. On the play Marist was the superior team by more than a margin of one point. Conditions were ideal, and there was an attendance of 15,000.

SYDENHAM CLUB HOLDS ANNUAL SMOKO.

The Sydenham Rugby League Club held their annual smoke concert in the at Asaph Street Hall on Saturday night. There was an attendance of about seventy, which included representatives from other clubs. Mr M’Keon presided. Presentation of a seagrass chair was made to Mr E. Jones, coach of the senior team, by the committee and senior members. The chairman and Mr P. Ring, president of the club, referred to Mr Jones’s zealous work for the club, and to his personality and advice was due much of the esprit de corps of the senior team and of the club generally. Mr Jones, who was accorded musical honours, thanked the club for their unexpected gift. The toast of “The Canterbury Rugby League” was proposed by Mr T. Davidson, captain of the Sydenham senior team. -Mr J. Lamberton proposed the toast of "Kindred Rugby League Clubs,” and this was responded to by -Messrs B. Green (Linwood), J. Wakefield and W. Cunningham (Woolston), F. Slieahan (Marist), E. Spencer (Waimairi), and L. Amos (Addington). In responding to the toast of “The Canterbury Rugby League,” the chairman of the executive (Mr J. K. Warrall) said that since its inception in Canterbury the code had met with a great deal of opposition, from some other codes, from some individuals, and from the Press generally. In that statement he did not include the newspaper which was represented there that night. That newspaper was the one which had given the most consistently fair deal. The speaker hoped that the other newspapers would fall into line In this respect. One encouraging feature was the increase in the number of schoolboy players, who numerically were considerably stronger than they were last The speaker thanked the Sydenham - Club for their continued loyal support to the League, and said that it was recognised that the club now had the strongest committee they had ever, possessed.
