MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Alexander Poyntz, for drunkenness, was convicted and fined 20s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. For casting offensive matter in a public place, Poyntz was convicted and discharged. A statutory first offender was fined 20s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. REMANDED. Raymond O’Neill (Mr K. M. Gresson) was remanded to appear on January 16 on a charge of failing to maintain his illegitimate child. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick said that a remand would be necessary as O’Neill was concerned in another charge in Napier. On the application of Mr Gresson, bail was allowed in £IOO and one surety of £IOO, accused to report daily to the police at Kaiapoi. TRAFFIC CASES. James Hazelhurst, for negligently driving a horse and cart, was convicted and fined 30s and costs. Thomas Edward Leonard Kell}', for having no tail-light affixed to his motor vehicle, was convicted and fined 5s and costs. Norman Donald M’Farlane was fined £2 and costs for driving a motor-cycle at a speed dangerous to the public. Leslie Aubrey Simmons and Devon Cecil Smith were each fined 20s and costs on similar charges. Henry Daniel Spence (Mr Hunter) was fined 20s and costs for negligently driving a motor-van. A charge against Ernest William Steer (Mr C’onnal) of failing to give way to traffic from right was dismissed. Ileene Ilillier Stringer, for driving a motor-car at a speed dangerous to the public, was fined 20s and costs. MAINTENANCE CASE. On the application of Mr Archer, who appeared for the wife, George Thomas Lusty was convicted and sentenced to three months’ * imprisonment for disobedience of a maintenance order, the | warrant to be suspended on payment i weekly of 5s off >he arrears.
