LABOUR VICTORY IS CELEBRATED AT TIMARU.

MR CLYDE CARR, M.P., THANKS SUPPORTERS.

A social evening to their friends and political supporters was given by Mr O. L. Carr, M.P. for Timaru, and Mrs Carr, in the Wentworth Hall last evening. There was a large attendance. In welcoming the guests Mr Carr said it was duty to introduce to his friends Mrs Carr, who had deeply interested herself in the affairs of Timaru. (Applause.) He went on to say that, in tendering the function, he was pleased to celebrate the wonderful victory which had come to Labour at the recent election. The Timaru result had caused Dominion-wide surprise and was referred to as one of the most unexpected political turns in the election. The speaker attributed his victory to the spade-work which had been carried on over a number of years by Labour followers in Timaru. He referred to the candidature of Mr P. C. Vinnell at an earlier election, as having had great influence at the 1928 election. When spoken to regarding the Labour win at Timaru. he always quoted the steady and faithful work of the followers of the Labour Party as being responsible. He had come along at the crucial moment, as it were, and had had the honour of winning the "eat. Mr Carr paid a tribute to Mr F. J. Rolleston, late member for Timaru. Mr Rolleston, he said, had had a difficult row to hoe and in holding two important portfolios he had faced an Herculean task. The speaker would give way to no man in his belief that Mr Rolleston had done his best. Mr Carr concluded by thanking his supporters for their assistance during the campaign, and by urging Labour followers to keep the aims of their party always in view. He wanted it to be realised that Labour in Timaru had no particular axe to grind, but was out to do its best for everybody. A programme of musical items followed. those present spending an enjoyable evening.
