MAIL CAR HELD UP IN CONWAY RIVER.

FIRMLY EMBEDDED IN LOOSE SHINGLE. The mail car to Kaikoura met with a misfortune at the Conway River crossing on the return journey to Kaikoura on Tuesday, the first occasion on which it had been able to get through for eight days. Sinking in the loose shingle, the car became firmly embedded. The mails and other parcels carried were got out safely, but on Thursday the car was-still in the river, with water running right over the body, in spite of repeated efforts to effect its release. This is the second time in a few weeks that the ford has proved treacherous, and goes to show the necessity for a bridge over the Conway and over the Mason, so as to make the route safe for traffic.
