BOYS’ ASSOCIATION. OTAGO v. CANTERBURY, Yesterday the annual, matches between the Otago and Canterbury Boys Cricket Associations were commenced at the Hagley Park. Oval. The senior game carries with it two trophies, the M'Clusky Shield, which is open to boys’ associations and leagues through New Zealand, and the Biltcliff Cup, which is restricted to annual competition between Otago and Canterbury. The junior match carries with it the Rix Cup, which is similarly restricted to the two southern provinces. Although neither game was productive of a very high standard of batting, the senior match was a really excellent example of the uncertainty of cricket for, although Canterbury at one time had six wickets down for 3 8. a fine effort by G. H. Carpenter, who notched 118 runs, saw the total roach 176 before the final wicket fell. V. Cusack, who took five wickets for 4 4 runs, registered an outstanding bowling performance for Otago and secured the “ hat-trick ” in the opening stages of the innings. Play in the junior game was rather slow, Otago taking practically the whole afternoon to compile 134 runs. The outstanding batsmen were D. Smith, who scored 51, and M. Walkinshaw, who also showed good form for 3 3. The two games will be resumed this morning at 9.30 a.m. Scores:— SENIOR MATCH. ■•Canterbury won the toss in the senior match and elected to bat, opening with Carpenter and Armstrong. The commencement. however, was disastrous, for when the total was one, Armstrong attempted to sneak a short single ancl failed to ground his bat in time. Westwood did not' shape confidently, and although Carpetner hit out and notched a couple of fours, Cusack came to light with a piece of fine bowling and bagged • Westwood. Grenfell and Harris with successive balls. Four wickets were now down for nine runs, and although Butterfield shaped more confident lv, Wilson snatched up a brilliant catch at cover-point, and the scoreboard read IS—s—4. The. next ball saw M’Carten scatter Adair’s bails, but the next man, M'Xish, played out the over. Evidently realising that the position required desperate measures. Carpenter went for the bowling aggressively. M'Xish. on Hie other hand, was content to keep his wicket intact. Runs came more quickly, and 42 had .been reached before the next wicket, fell, a swinger from M’Carten bringing about M'Xish’s downfall. Jamieson joined Carpenter, and runs continued to mount. Both batsmen were aggressive, but, unfortunatelv, after he had added a useful LS. Jamieson was run out in attempting a short single. Sutherland batted cautiously. leaving the scoring to Carpenter, who, although some of his strokes were uppish, was now batting freely. The hundred was passed soon after the dismissal of Jamieson, and when Sutherland was bowled by Cusack, the score stood at 151 for nine wickets, whilst Carpenter’s own total was 92. The last batsman. Judson. kept his end up. and Carpenter reached the century with a big hit to the boundary. The innings closed for 176 runs. Geddes and Stevenson took first, knock for Otago, and some fairly brisk batting saw 14 readied. The former batsman lifted M’Nish to Grenfell at mid-off. Stevenson went next over, but a. useful partnership then developed between Cusack and M’Carten. Both in their strokes in the off. but the scoring was rather slow. At 51 M’Nish got his third wicket, M’Carten popping one up to Jamieson at point. Rodgerson and Wilson did not survive kng, arid 67 runs 'for* five* wickets. Scores: — CANTERBURY. First Innings. T. E. The latter scored a single off ll.cnwood’s third ball^and Disaster nu7omtookOlago, Henwood’s next two overs seeing Duggan. Aitchison and Anderson dismissed, and three wickets were down (or 1 run. Smith joined Walkinshaw and, although the latter batsman was ’’ scratching ” badly, the left-hander shaped much more confidently. Walkinshaw now began to settle down and several changes were made in the bowling. The Canterbur v captain, Goldstone, came on to bowl and Ills fifth ball saw Hooper neatlv stump Walkinshaw. The last ball o'f the over saw a repetition of this performance and six wickets were down for 62 Saxton did not last long, being “ yorked ” by Henwood and although Dalziel showed attractive form he lifted one back to the bowler when his total stood at wards Fright came on for a second* time and bis first delivery saw Smith mis-hit the ball to Gill. M’Cawe did not last very long and the innings closed for'l34. Canterbury opened with Gill and Jordan and, although the latter player did not survive long, Dobson joined Gill and a nice partnership developed. With the last ball of the day, Smith caught and bowled Gill, who had butted soundly, stumps being drawn with the score -10 for two Wickets. OTAGO. . First Innings. O. Duggan, b Henwood 0 C.
