CITY COUNCIL INQUIRY WILL BE PUBLIC ONE.

CITIZENS MAY GIVE EVIDENCE AFFECTING MR HUNTER'S RESIGNATION

Works Committee of the City Council has decided that the inquiry into matters arising out of the resignation by Mr G. R. Hunter of his seat on the City Council, shall be open to the Press and to all citizens desirous of evidence. The Works Committee met yesterday afternoon under the chairmanship of Councillor H. T. Armstrong, M.P., and after dealing with ordinary business, which was taken first in order to give an opportunity for all members to be present, considered the question of the inquiry ordered by the City Council, at its meeting on October 1, into arising out of Mr Hunter’s resignation. The Mayor (the Rev J. K. Archer) was present till close on 6 p.m., and all the members of the committee were in attendance, when the question of the inquiry was discussed CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT. The committee met at 4 p.m., and shortly after 6 pan. the chairman made the following statement to a representative of the “Lyttelton Times”;— “It has been decided that the inquiry shall open at 2.30 p.m. on Friday, October 12, at the City Council Chambers. The Works Committee will be the Committee of Inquiry. “The order of will be:— “(1) The alleged letting of contracts without calling for tenders. “(2) In what way, or manner, the alleged breach of the Municipal Corporations Act occurred. “(3) Was the breach committed knowingly? “(4) To what extent were the Council’s officers involved ? “(5) To what extent was the Works Committee involved? “The Press will be invited to attend, and all those citizens desirous of giving evidence. Anyone who can throw Light on the matter is urgently requested to attend; it is to them the committee looks to be supplied with information. The committee will produce all the information at its disposal. “We are not prosecuting anybody but we want to know all the facts of the case. It we are not acquainted with all the facts, we want to know them from those who are acquainted with them.”
