COMPETITIONS SOCIETY ELECTS NEW OFFICERS AT ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Christchurch Competitions Society was h*9la last evening, Mr J. W.. Baty (president) being in the chair. There were also present—Messrs A. Brewins, J. Murphy, F. J. Alley, A. B. Lane, D. Crozier, T. H. Williams, C. S. Thompson and Dr F. C. A’Court. An apology was received from Mr A. H. Hobbs. The treasurer (Mr Thompson) presented the balance-sheet of the 19-8 festival, which showed that there was a deficit of £9 Us 5d on the season. The income included the .following prin?cipal items:—Door receipts £985,. entrance fees £l2l, season tickets £63,. programme sales £93, profit on Inscribed stock held by the society £4O, interest on Savings Bank deposit £1;8. member:*’ subscriptions £25, and advertising £6}. On the expenditure side-, the main items were:—Frizes £2 66, judges and accompanists £286, advertising, etc., £207, rent, lighting, etc., £247, wages and salaries £267, hire of pianos, furniture an<f music £3O, printing programmes £92, and general expenses £24. The total expenses were £1423 12s Bd, and the revenue fell short of that sum by £9 11s 6d. Mr Thompson said that the expenses In connection with the judges had been unusually heavy. There had also been the amount paid to the stage hands, which was more than 25 per cent of the rent of the hall. The society, he thought, had dofie very well and coukl congratulate itself on the result, especially in view of the experience the Wellington Society. He moved the adoption of the balance-sheet. Mr J. Murphy seconded the motion, and congratulated the treasurer. It had been a successful, season, and the small dfebit was not discouraging in view of the large extra expenditure. The society was run much more than either the Wellington or the Auckland Society. Mr Williams sa.id that the society had net assets valued at £1645, which would b© increased shortly to about £I7OO. He also congratulated the treasurer and the committee on the management of the society’s affairs. Mr F. J. Alley said that the balancesheet was surprisingly good. There might be a means of bringing more grist to the mill, and the committee might well explore them, as it had the material for excellent entertainments. Mr Baty said that they should not measure their success entirely by the balance-sheet. On the results of the year they had little to be ashamed of. The committee had worked well, and had given him most generous support, for which he was very grateful. The balance-sheet was adopted, and a very hearty vote of thanks was passed to the treasurer. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mr A. Brewins; vice-presi-dent, Mr A. B. Lane; treasurer, Mr C. S. Thompson; secretary, Mr T. F. Hall; committee (five vacancies), Messrs J. W. Baty, F. J. Alley, A. H. Hobbs, T. Newburgh and Dr F. C. A’Court (all re-eiected). Votes of thanks were passed to -the retiring president, the secretary (Mr T. F. Hall), the newspapers and other helpers, whose aid had been freely placed at the disposal of the society. A sub-committee was appointed to draw up a report for submission to the City Council regarding certain improvements desired to the Municipal Concert Chamber. Several members remarked that the arrangement of the Chamber required to be reviewed, and that improvements were urgently required, in the interests both of comfort and convenience.
