CATHEDRAL SQUARE.
To the Editor. Dear Sir, —It would be inconceivable that a Mayor and councillors elected to their responsible positions by votes representing all sections of the community could refuse to consider the viewpoint of the assemblage who me‘ at the Chamber of Commerce Hall. Undoubtedly the subject is a knotty problem, but there have been others quite as difficult, and satisfactory solu tions have been forthcoming. I do not know who has been selected to place the view’s of the objectors before the council. They have such a strong case that it may be assumed that suggestions of a practical and constructive character will be in evidence, as it is little use kicking up i dust without offering a reasonable substitute. As usual, a lot of unwise things have been written and spoken on this question, but one solid fact emerges, that there exists a very strong consensus of opinion against further encroachments in the Square. When the Godley statue was in its natural and rightful position the old-timers had a p irdonable prid a . in it, and there are many who will hail with joy its restoration to its original site.—l am, etc., A. D. lIASSALL.
