FLAPPERS.

To The Editor. Dear Sir, —Whether Dr Mildred Stanley attacked flappers at the PanPacific Women’s Conference, or whether she didn’t, really doesn’t matter. The fact remains that the subject was discussed, and someone looked at things from a really sensible point of view, and had enough courage to say that the modem flapper is, in effect, not living up to the high standard of womanhood which her mother upheld. It is right that women should have equal rights with men; it is right that they should have access to the professions, but it is- decidedly not right that they should make perfect asses of themselves by apeing men on all possible occasions. The sophisticated young woman of to-day is the mother of tomorrow. Is it not a fair question to ask how she can fulfil the duties of motherhood if her menu is to consist of cocktails and cigarettes? Compulsory measures will not make these young women behave themselves. It is only when they can be brought to realise how terrible the consequences of their reckless behaviour will be to them and to their families that they will realise that the height of ambition is not to make themselves conspicuous, but to endeavour to lead lives that will once again place womankind in a position where they can demand respect.—l am, etc., STUDENT.
