MUSIC FROM LONDON CHEERS EARLY RISER.

RE-BROADCAST OF 2LO HEARD IN CHRISTCHURCH (By a Radio Correspondent.) To music from the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Orchestra. London, I chopped the wood at 6.30 this morning. To the accompaniment of a soprano solo I built and lit the fire, and, later, I had breakfast, whilst an organist in that far-away capital played Handel’s “Largo.” The explanation ? Station 2BL, Sydney, was re-broadcasting SSW, Chelmsford, who were relaying the evening programme of 2LO. 2BL came on the air at 6.30 a.m. (New Zealand time), with one of the most successful re-broadcasts of an English programme yet heard. Music came in strongly and with great clarity, though speech was not too clear, owing to static. SSW, Chelmsford, is a short-wave experimental station, owned and operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation, and its transmissions are frequently heard in New Zealand, but listeners on the broadcast wave band rarelj* have an opportunity of hearing them. At 6.30 this morning it was still dark, and, until daylight came, reception of Sydney’s broadcast was excellent. At seven o’clock, however, static grew heavier, and a few impish, howling valves, dancing a fandango across 2BL’s transmission, helped to spoil the transmission, which, by 7.30 a.m., began to fade. In London they were thinking of going to bed; in Christchurch I was thinking of the day’s work ahead.
