FOUND ASLEEP IN RAILWAY CARRIAGE.
WORK DOESN’T LAST TOO LONG, SAYS RECENT ARRIVAL IN DOMINION. Robert Johnston, a Scotsman, who has been in the Dominion for three years, was arrested early this morning while asleep in a railway carriage in the Christchurch railway yard. He was charged at the Magistrate’s Court later with being in the railway yard at night without lawful excuse. Johnston was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick told the Magistrate (Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) of the circumstances of the arre,st, adding that Johnston was a stranger. Nothing was known of him. The Magistrate (to defendant): Done any decent work since you arrived in New Zealand?—Oh, yes, but the work doesn’t last too long, answered Johnston. What have you been doing?—Labouring generally. Got any prospects?—Yes. I've got a train ticket. Where are you going?—Waimate. Sub-Inspector Fitzpatrick: I believe he has got a ticket. lie had better make use of it. Th# Magistrate then ordered Johnston to come up for sentence if called upon within six months.
