TERRIFIC GALE CAUSES DAMAGE.
HOUSES UNROOFED IN TE AROHA DISTRICT. Per Press Association. HAMILTON. May 1. The Te Aroha district yesterday experienced the heaviest gale for years, accompanied by driving rain. Extensive damage was done to buildings, and the power lines were torn down, cutting off the light and power. Telegraph and telephone communica tion was cut off in the morning, when the gale was terrific and business was At a standstill. Roofs of houses were torn from the rafters, and chimneys crashed down. The drill shed on the showground* was pnroofed and almost torn to pieces. A small boy received injuries, being picked up by the.wind and hurled to the ground. At Matingaiti a horse with a rider was blown off its feet.
