NEW PUMPING STATION FOR WATER SUPPLY.

In connection with the city’s water supply, the Water Supply Committee reported at last night’s meeting of the City Council that it had made inquiries with regard to a suitable site for the proposed auxiliary pumping station, in connection with which the wells authorised at last meeting of the council w T ould be sunk. It was essential that the proposed station should be in such a position as to enable an electrical supply of 11,000 volts to be maintained for the pumps. It was, therefore, considered that a portion of an electrical sub-station site would be eminently suitable. The Municipal Electricity Department proposed to erect a sub-station in May's Road, and the committee recommended that the department be asked for authority to utilise a portion of this site for the proposed pumping station. In the event of this permisison being obtained, it would be necessary to run a 12in main from the proposed sub-station to Papanui Road, interconnecting the main with the presen-t Gin main in May’s Road. The estimated cost of this was £ISOO, but the work would not be carried out for at least tw T o years.

The report was referred back to the committee so that the Electricity Department could go into the question with the committee.

The committee also reported that the reticulation of Bromley with water mains was essential in connection with the laying of sewers in the district. A proposal to raise a loan for this purpose was submitted to the ratepayers of the district some years ago and was rejected. The committee therefore proposed to apply to the Board of Health for a requisition enabling the council to raise a loan under the provisions of "The Health Act" for reticulating the district, and it was recommended that steps be taken in this direction. The report was adopted.
