MR ELL HAS NEW PLAN FOR SQUARE LAY-OUT.
WOULD RESTORE GODLEY TO HIS OLD PLACE,
Two hexagon shelters, in gothic architecture, in the shape of the old market cross, are envisaged by Mr 11. G. Ell as an improved lay-out for the centre of Cathedral Square. The restoration cf the Godley statue to its old position on the grass plot is part of Mr Ell’s plan. He would pull the present shelter down, keep the men’s lavatory underground, but add two shelters each about 30ft in diameter near each end of the present shelter. There would be curved bays with seats in them on each of the six sides, and in each he would have a bust or mask of notable pioneers.
A city architect has promised to prepare plans of the proposed shelters, which would not interfere, Mr Ell says, with the openness of the Square, or hide the beautiful view' westwards along Worcester Street.
