CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry. S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A statutory first offender for drunkenness was convicted and fined £l. in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. AFTER HOURS. John Henry was fined £1 and costs for being on licensed premises after hours. Sergeant M Gregor said that he saw accused being put out of the Zetland Hotel at 6.20 p.m. For being on licensed premises after hours, Alfred Bruce Murray was fined £1 and costs. UNLICENSED SHOT GUN. For being the owner of an unlicensed shot gun, William Jane was fined 10s and costs. AT THE CROSSING. For crossing a railway line when the signals were against him, William Davis Hill was fined £1 and costs. Francis Ever Craig was fined £2 and costs for exposing goods for sale on a Sunday. For Sunday trading, Francis Ilaast was fined £1 and costs. Sundav trading cost John Ishcrwood a fine of £1 and costs. For Sunday trading. George Jefford was fined £1 and costs. SUNDAV TRADING. Agnes Lawrence was fined 10s for exposing goods for sale on a Sunday, and for Sunday trading £1 and costs. Charles Millow (Mr Cottrell) was fined 10s for exposing goods for sale on a Sunday, and for Sunday trading £2 and costs. “ The defendant’s shop is persistently offending,” said Senior-Sergeant Martin, when Mavis Nelson was charged with Sunday trading. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed. For similar offences Agnes Robinson was fined £2 and costs, and Catherine Wilson was lined £1 and costs. MILK BELOW STANDARD. Gordon Fergus, a milk vendor (Mr Johnston), was charged with having sold milk below standard. Mr Brown, in prosecuting, said that a test of defendant’s milk had been taken on May 27. The percentage of milk fat was 2.98, whereas 3.25 was required. It was obvious that no water had been added to the milk. Mr Johnston said that defendant got his milk from a farm in Sumner, and the standard of the milk on that farm •was above reproach. On this occasion .strippings had been put in one can, and had not been sufficiently mixed. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed SHOPKEEPERS DEFEND THEIR CASES. Hubert Colonna pleaded not guilty i to a charge of exposing goods for sale on Sunday. Ilis defence was that he ran a restaurant, and that people had to go through the shop to get to the tea rooms. He could not keep all the sweets in the shop covered. The Magistrate fined him £1 and costs. Catherine Downs (Mr Lascelles), who was charged with exposing goods for sale on a Sunday, pleaded not guilty. Mr Lascelles contended that a reasonable attempt had been made to cover the sweets in the shop. A further charge of Sunday trading was dismissed. On the first charge, a fine of 10s and costs was imposed. William M’Kinley leaded not guilty to charges of exposing goods for sale on a Sunday, and of Sunda}' trading. Defendant had been unwell and his little girl had served chocolates without any authority. On the first charge he was fined £1 and costs, and the second was dismissed. John Isherwood was fined £1 and costs on a charge of Sunday trading. NO LICENSE TO BUILD. Raymond Arnold Edor was fined £2 and costs for building two houses without giving notice. TRAM FARES NOT PAID. J. Draper was charged with twice having failed to pay his fares on tramcars. On each charge Draper was fined 10s and costs, and ordered to pay solicitor’s lee. Sara Lester (Mr Stacey) was also fined 10s and costs for not having paid a tram fare. Mr Hutchison, who appeared for the board, said that it was not her first offence of the kind. Mr Stacey said that defendant was an elderly woman who was to be looked after by relatives. CYCLED ON FOOTPATH. Charles Cross, for having cycled on a footpath, was fined 10s and costs. Henry B. Down was convicted and ordered to pay costs for being in charge of a motor vehicle at night without a attached. DRIVING STOCK LOOSE. Gardiner, for driving bullocks fester in Riccarton between 8.30 a.m. ‘J p.m., was fined £1 aud costs. C. E. Gumbrill. for driving sheep loose between 9.15 a.m. and 4 p in. in the Riccarton Borough, was fined £2 jnd costs.
