EX-SOLDIER AMPUTEES WAIT ON MR COATES.

(Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, May 21. Protesting against the Government’s proposals to standardise artificial limbs, a deputation representing ex-soldier amputees waited on the Prime Minister this morning, asking that greater consideration should be given to the needs of individual cases. Since Mr Coates was in Auckland a few weeks ago, there had been a change in matters affecting artificial limbs, said Mr T. S. Miller, and specifications as issued by the Government seemed a little harsh. Standardisation was what returned soldiers mainly objected to. The Prime Minister observed that, with standardisation, greater service would be given the individual. It would be very expensive to keep a lot of spare parts. Mr Y. Dibble: The trouble is that the Government is trying to standardise parts that can’t be standardised. In conclusion, Mr Coates said that he would be very glad to discuss the matter with the Minister of Defence and place the representations before him before any contract for the supply of limbs was let. If the position was not met reasonably, it would not be £or want of trying.
