EVENTS OF THE WEEK.

SALE OF CAKES. The Plunket Society will hold a sale of cakes and produce in their rooms, Sea View Road, on Saturday next. The committee will be most grateful for any gifts of cakes, etc., whiefc may be left in the rooms on Saturday morning. METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. The thirty-third anniversary of the New Brighton Methodist " Sundav School was held in Joyland Theatre last Sunday. The choir of over 200 voices. was conducted by Mr F. H. Christian. The morning service was conducted by the Rev 11. J. Odell, the afternoon by the Rev E. D. Patcliett, and the evening by the Rev R. Raine. Duets and solos were given by Sally Lancaster, Newton Dean, Muriel Kershaw, Elsie Ileale, Eric Farmer, Eileen Lawry, Vaughan Carrington, Eileen Hutton, Millicent Cranmer, Phyllis Weavers and Joan Salkeld. Recitations were

effectively given by Jean Ilounsell, Lewis Hudson. Peter Mercer, Elsie Heal, and Don Farmer. On Monday evening the Mayor (Mr J. Gamble), presided at the annual prize giving in Joyland Theatre. Intermediate—Elsie Ileal. Hector Nelson. Junior—Peter Mercer, Graham Brunt. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A special meeting of the New Brighton School Committee was held on Wednesday evening. Mr H. A. Glasson, presiding. Two tenders were received for the erection of a shelter shed. A deputation consisting of Messrs Glasson, Buxton and Robins was appointed to wait on the Education Board in connection with the erection of the shelter shed. It was decided to adopt Mr Pearson’s suggestion that a Christmas Tree and Father Christmas be substituted for prize-giving in the infant school. It was suggested that Mr Dunkley act as Father Christmas. PERSONAL. Mr J. Osborn is progressing favourably after his operation, and it is expected that, he will be home shortly. Mr and Mrs W. Cooke returned last week from the Franz Josef Glacier. Mr and Mrs Torepe were visitors to the borough this week. BERESFORD CLUB. The weekly euchre party and dance of the Beresford Club was held in the Pier Hall last Monday. The prize winners of the euchre tournament were: Mesdames Nankiville. Whitley, and Stevens, Messrs Cockle. De Roo, and Mr Marton won the special. SEAMEN’S GUILD. A meeting of the New Brighton British Seamen’s Guild will be held at Mrs J. 11. Shanks’s residence, 55, Hawke Street, on Tuesday, November 23, at 2.30 p.m. BOY SCOUTS. The Fourth New Brighton Troop is holding a birthday evening in the South Brighton Hall on Tuesday evening next at 7.45. W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. was held on Thursday, Mrs Hall presiding over a good attendance of members. A hearty welcome was extended to a member on transfer from another branch; It was decided that the annual meeting in December should be held in conjunction with a "Bring and Buy" social. An excellent paper dealing with the Mother's part of a World Peace was read. Y.P.C.T.U. The members of the Young People’s Christian Temperance Union held a successful social on Wednesday evening, Mrs MitchelL presiding over, a good attendance of members,.. Five new members were initiated. NORTH BEACH NOTES. BOROUGH WORK. Progress is being made- with the sea wall, about half the distance arranged to be constructed being . completed. Excavations are being made on the corner of Bowhill Road and the Esplanade, where a sump for fire prevention purposes, with a capacity of 5000 gallons, will be constructed. This will be a good aid to the Fire Brigade in case of another fire in the shop area of North Beach. In the past the brigade has been handicapped, as the nearest water supply was at Tonks Street and Swann Street. SCHOOL ADDITIONS. The substantial additions to the North Brighton School are nearing completion, and, if not finished before the school holidays, they -will be ready for occupation when the school resumes. BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the North Beach and Waimairi Burgesses’ Association was held in the Peace Memorial Hall on Monday evening, Mr E. A. M. Leaver (president) in the chair. Mr T. Hales Strahan, of Monten, wrote thanking the association for electing him a life member. A letter was received from the secretary of the North Beach Gala and Foreshore Improvement Society, stating that the society had decided to devote the whole of the proceeds of this year’s gala to the fund for the erection of the sea wall.. The secretary was instructed to write congratulating Councillor F. D. Muirson on his election to the Borough Council. Several complaints regarding roads in the district were referred to Councillor F. J. L. Scott. It was decicjed to place on record the services rendered to the association by Mr A. C. Rowlands. The chairman introducqd Colonel A. E. Loach, who gave an address in connection with the Waimakariri River Trust’s proposal to straighten the course of the river. At the conclusion of the address, Mr Loach answered several questions, and was accorded a vote of thanks for his address. NORTH BEACH GALA.

A meeting of the Gala Committee was held this week in the Peace Memorial Hall. Mr E. A. M. Leaver presiding over a fair attendance.. It was decided to abandon the proposed jumble sale and substitute a social, the arrangement for which was left in the hands of Mrs D. Wilson. At the suggestion of the organising secretary (Mr F. J. L. Scott), it was agreed that, in lieu of the usual opening ceremony, the member for the district be asked to make a public presentation of the prizes won in the school children’s beach championship races. On the. motion of Mr White, it was decided to ask the New Brighton Borough Council to expend the money subscribed by the Gala Society by making a start with the construction of the sea wall in front of the Peace Memorial Hall. It was decided to ask the North Beach Surf Club to run the surf events on gala day for the gala shield and cups. The. secretary reported on the progress' of the " Miss North Beach ” beauty competition, and the following Dance Committee was set up:—Messrs W. M’Donald, S. H. E. Perrin, S. Hamilton, E. H. Barker, R. Rump, B. Leverett, Dick Snell, jun., F. Chambers, Misses Nelson. Hill. Dobson, Thompson apd Mrs Mumford. W.C.T.U. A meeting of the North Brighton branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in the Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon. In the absence of the president. Mrs E. Leaver, vice-president, presided over a good attendance. Mis J. F. Eames, president of the young people’s section, gave an encouraging report of the “ Y ’’ branch. Mrs E. M’Combs gave an address on “ Citizenship,” in which the speaker eulogised the work of the pioneers. Mrs M’Combs expressed her surprise and pleasure at the activity of the work of the W.C.T.U. in North Brighton. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs M’Combs for her address. PERSONAL.
