NOTES OF PAST AND PRESENT.

SPECIAL. CORRESPONDENT OK THE " STAR"

SPREYDON BOWLING CLUB. The first qualifying round for the Dunlop Trophy resulted as follows: L. Sandford beat T. Holmes; W. Allen beat J. Thomas. The M'Gimpsey Buttons competition resulted in I. ■ Hancock and W. Wardell beating T. Satterthwaite and W. Eden. LAND-LOCKED SECTIONS IN SPREYDON. The steady progress of residences being erected on front, sections of the large blocks of unroaded land in the district will be discussed at the December meeting of the Burgesses’ Association, .when a paper will be read and suggestions put. forward in an endeavour to overcome a serious matter not only to Spreydon, but to the whole city. The question has repeatedly been asked, “ Why don’t, you open these blocks?" and even owners of land hereabouts have been prevented from opening up their land owing to no definite system of roading being in existence. SPREYDON PARK QGEEN CARNIVAL. There was no alteration in the position of the three queens this week, Miss Olga Robinson, bowlers’ queen, being still on top, followed by Miss Hazel Clark, tennis queen, and Miss Enid Ealham, children's croquet queen. To further the interest of the tennis queen, a social evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs R. Rickerby, Barrington Street, last Thursday evening, there being about sixty persons present. The winners of the euchre prizes were:- Mrs T. Clemens 1, Mrs Barnard 2; Mr E. Townsend l, Mr Johnston 2: consolation prizes, Mrs H. Sparkes and Mr G. Wear. During the evening the opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mr and Mrs Rickerb\’ in appreciation of their kindness in allowing the use of their residence for social evenings during the progress of the queen carnival. Mr Cooke made the., presentation. Mr Rickerby suitably responded. The bowlers’ section spent an enjoyable evening at the residence of Mr and Mrs Tillotson. Barrington Street, last Saturday. The euchre prize-winners were:— Mrs S. Robinson and Mr Truman ; consolation prizes, Mrs P. Ilennessy and Mr Harrison. The children’s section of the queen carnival held a concert in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Selwyn Street, last Tuesday evening. A fairly large audience was present. Miss Waugh’s dancing pupils and other leading artists gave the concert. Dances were given by the following:—Misses Patti Marshall, Ngairi Anderson, Gladys Boulton, Iris Ashby, Doris O’Connor, Joan Yardley, Gracie Smith, Lyoe Rattray. Dulcie Timms, Bessie Kearney, Madge Pyke and Margaret M’lntosh and blasters Colin Campbell and Gerald Geddes. Vocal and instrumental items were given by Misses B. Pollard. E. Woods and A. Wilson and Messrs Down, Dunshea. Risby, Hales, Dickson and Dell. Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., occupied the chair. WASHINGTON LODGE, No. 2S. The fortnightly meeting was held last Monday, N.G. Brother F. Beattie presiding over a good attendance of members. The hospital visitors reported that they had visited the Sanatorium. and found all brothers were progressing favourably. It was decided to send letters of condolence to D.D.G.M. Brother Rintoul, P.G., Brother Rowlands and Brother Knights in their recent bereavements.. The' sum of £2l 19s was passed for sick pay, and nine candidates were initiated into the order. The following Past Grands were nominated for Grand Lodge representatives :—Brothers Broadley, Greenslade, Rintoul and Garters. The first nomination of officers resulted as follows:—N.G., Brother L. Clark: V.G., Brothers Entwistle, Hayward, Street, Smith and Deibert; secretary, Brother W. 11. Simmons; treasurer. Brother L. W. Cooper; recording secretary, Brother E. A. Knights; president to Te Tewera Lodge, Brother L. W. Cooper.;. Vice Grands, Brothers Colville and Hutchinson. PARTY. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of INI r and Mrs E. J. Good, Stourbridge Street, /Spreydon, last Wednesday, to celebrate the eighth birthday of their daughter, Doris. Games and musical items occupied the evening, and the guest was the recipient of many presents. Among those present were:—Misses Lorna Ifawken, Iris Paterson, Irene Clark, Mavis Good, May Bell, Nellie Glover, Bonnie Roud, Betty Taylor, Thelma Wilson, Erin Hilson, Lulu and Margaret Kiddle, Ngaire and Doris Good, Elwyn, Mavis and Peggy Clemens, Masters Keith Campbell, Ray Wilson, Willie Gaskell, Clem Randall and Arthur Good. “ VERY ANXIOUS.” If “ Very Anxious ” is after his dip this year, he should not ask somebody else to take a tumble, but get busy himself an(f gather some of the old members together and reform the club. Besides obtaining support from the Spreydon School Committee, who are only too anxious to secure assistance from interested persons, he is sure to obtain the help of the swimming centre. From reliable information, the Spreydon School Committee would be prepared to hand over the bath free

of charge to the club if they would clean out the pool regularly. So, "Very Anxious," get busy, call a meeting, and we will all attend to help vou along. PLUNGERS. ADDINGTON BURGESSES. The Social Committee of the Addington Burgesses met. recently to finalise arrangements for the grand annual euchre party and dance to be held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Selwyn Street. Particulars are advertised. The successful players at. the last weekly euchre held in St Mary’s Schoolroom were Mesdamcs Aitcheson, Whitford, Philpott and Collett, and Messrs Reader, Hyland, Beecroft and Pearce. t LOYAL ADDINGTON LODGE. The regular meeting of the Loyal Addington Lodge, M.U..1 0.0. F., was’ held in the lodge room, Dickens Street, on Monday, November 15, 1928. The N.G., Brother R. W. Flintoff. presided , over a good attendance of brothers. Brothers W. G. Wigglesworth, P.G.. D. Manhire, P.G., and W. H. Lareombe reported having visited sick brethren, and were thanked. Sick pay amounting to £6 13s 4d was passed for payments. Accounts amounting to 19s 2d were also passed for payment. One brother was given the White Degree, the conductors being Brothers A. Gow and Turnbull, P.G. The report and receipts and expenditure account of the anniversary social were read by the E.S. and adopted. Two candidates were proposed for membership. Nominations were received as follows: N.G., Brother L. A. Gourlav; V.G., Brothers A. Hammersley. A. Gow and Bolton: E.S., Brothers, W. G. Wigglesworth, .P.G., L. G. P. White and Bolton; auditor, Brother W. 11. Larcombc. SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. Sunday School anniversary services in connection with the Union Methodist. Church, Addington, were conducted on Sunday last by the Revs B. James, L. B. Neale, and A. Liverscdgc. Full congregations attended, particularly in the evening, when extra seating Had to be provided. Appropriate addresses were given, and the children, under the direction of Mr J. H. Jones, sang specially selected music. The singing was accompanied by an orchestra, with piano (Miss Marjory Trevor-Smith and organ (Miss D. Down). Celebrations were continued on Tuesday, when high tea was served, followed by a public meeting, presided over by the Rev A. Liversedge. Special music was repeated, and solos and duets were rendered by the children. Prizes were also distributed. ADDINGTON SWIMMING CLUB. The official opening of the Addington Swimming Club will take place next Saturday, at 2.30 p.m., in the school baths, Jerrold Street. .Club races and novelty events will be included in the programme, and all present and intending members are -cordially invited.
