Mine. Liza Lehmann used to tell a story of Nordica, the great American soprano, as hostess. She gave a dinner party at which Mme. Lehmann was one of the guests. The latter stayed on a little while after the others had gone and no sooner had the door closed behind the last on than Nordica, sinking into a chair completely exhausted, cried Liza Lehman, I just despise entertaining!” Rubinstein as guest was certainly an eccentric. Many stories are told of his queer behaviour in that capacilty. Once at a dinner party he became so bored that suddenly he rose from the table, saying, “I can’t stand this!” rushed into the hall, seized his hat and coat, and fled leaving his hostess and the other guests gasping with astonishment. Electric steaming irons, with a water reservoir and tiny holes in the ironing surface for the emergence of steam, are now being produced in America. It is claimed that this device obviates the need for damping clothes before ironing. j
