STUDENT ACCOUNTANTS HOLD GATHERING.
The sixth meeting of the Christchurch Accountant Students’ Society was held on Monday evening in the lecture hall of the Public Library. Mr R. J. 71'Laron presiding over a. large attendance of members. The evening was devoted to a public speaking competition for a challenge cup presented by 71 r C. Holland "The Greatest Figure in New Zealand History" was the set speech, ten minutes being alloAved each speaker. 7lr G. C. Pickett, took as his subject, "The Life of Edward .Gibbon Wakefield." The speaker traced Wakefield's life from his schooldays in England, and mentioned his famous books on rolonisation. 71 r Pickett dealt, with Wakefield's activities in connection with the settlement of New Zealand. In conclusion, the speaker eulogised Wakefield's work, the fruits of which Avere to be seen at the present time. The second speaker, 7Tr T. W. Tymons, dealt with "The life of Richard .John Seddon," whose career the speaker outlined. 71 r T,vinous also dealt with 71 r Seddon's public life, arid (lie benefits which accrued to the Dominion as a result of his actions and legislation. Following the set speeches, the candidates were given a subject on which they delivered an impromptu speech. The subject chbseh was " J'ltc White Australia Policy.” Mr Pickett decried the policy oT Australia for Australians only, declaring that the better class Asiatics did not come out to Australia, and that until the colour line was abolished there could be no world peace. Mi- Tymons defended the policy on the grounds that if wholesale immigration “of Asiatics was permitted, the count rv would be overrun with these ?a.eV and Great Britain would then have’ to look elsewhere to place her !
