BRAKES DID NOT ACT AND TRAIN SKIDDED

WITNESS TELLS OF CRASH AT CAULFIELD INQUEST. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. MELBOURNE, June 23. At the Caulfield train smash inquest a witness gave evidence that he saw the whole accident from the platform. He said the Oakleigh train’s speed was about sixteen miles au hour and when the brakes were applied they reduced it by half. The noise of the brakes was greater than the actual crash, yet they seemed to be taking little effect on' the train wheels, which appeared to be locked. The train seemed to skid into the Carrum train. Visibility was good, but the ground was wet. Further evidence showed that when the signals were tested after the accident they operated satisfactorily.
