COUNCIL IS ASKED TO MEET ON STAGE.
WANGANUI PEOPLE RESENT RECENT RATE INCREASE. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, June 23An extraordinary request is to be made to the Wanganui City Council as a result of a public meeting tonight. The meeting was called to discuss the council’s recent decision to increase the rates l>v £34,700 for the present year. This decision was the subject of hostile comment at tonight's meeting, ratepayers describing it as an attempt to discredit the newly introduced system of rating on unimproved value. A motion was carried asking the council to withdraw its decision, also to conduct its next discussion on the question on the Opera House stage with the ratepayers as audience. Ratepayers expressed their intention of swarming into the council chambers on meeting night if the request were not acceded to.
