STOCK PRICES.

SUMMARY OF YESTERDAY’S SALE. The entry of fat cattle at the weeklv stock sale at Addington yesterday totalled 500 head, a few less than last week. It included several lines of well finished steers, but the proportion of cows was heavier than has been the case at recent sales, and many of them were of inferior quality. The demand was irregular and, except in the case of the best beef, prices were inclined to be lower than last week, though not by more than about 2s a 1001 b. Prices a 1001 b were: Best medium weight beef 36s 6d to 395, heavy weight beef 34s to 36s 6d, good cow’ and heifer beef 30s to 345, inferior 25s to 28s, and rough down to 20s. The entry of fat sheep was a large one, comprising thirteen races, one less than last week. On the whole the quality was good, though it was not so outstanding as has been the case at recent sales. The proportion of wethers was somewhat heavier. At the start of the sale prices were inclined to be a bit weaker than at the previous market, but they soon firmed up and closing rates were from Is to Is 6d a head in advance of opening rates. The export buyers competed freely for all sheep suitable for their purposses, paying full schedule rates and in some cases a little more. In this respect the market was better than last week’s, at which there was rather restricted export competition. The varding of fat lambs was a very small one, only about 600 head being forward. They sold well at full schedule prices. For a winter sale the entry of store sheep was a very large one. It included some 10,000 sheep from the North Island, besides a good many local lines. The bulk of the North Island sheep consisted of ewes in low condition, and buyers were not keen after them. In fact, it was a wonder that some of them found buyers at all, considering their poor condition. Good local ewes sold well as also did hoggets, but wethers met with a rather weak demand. Cows and bulls formed the bulk of the store cattle entry. They sold at late rates. One pen of three and a half year old Hereford store steers made £lO The entry of dairy cattle totalled 68 head. Old cows formed the bulk of the dairy cattle penned and they were not in keen demand. Spring calvers, too. were bard to quit, but young cows close to calving were disposed of readily at good prices. A large number of the vealers offered were quite unfit for killing and much of the stuff was sold for only a few shillings a head. Good vealers, on the other hand, were in demand and sold w’ell at late rates. There was a good demand for fat pigs, especially porkers. Baconers were inclined to lie slightly easier than last

week. Not many store pigs came forward. and there were plenty of buyers for them. The result was that all lots were disposed of readily at satisfactory prices.
