WOMAN CHARGED WITH FRAUD.

SENT TO SUPREME COURT FOR TRIAL. A Police allegation that she purchased three coats and charged them to another woman’s account led to the appearance of Margaret Durkin, a married woman, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. She was charged that in incurring a liability of £2l to J. Ballantyne and Co. she obtained credit by fraud. Mr A. D. Ford. J.P., and Mr F. 11. Christian, J.P., were on the Bench. Mr Hutchinson appeared for accused. Ivy Ward, a saleswoman employed by j. Baliantyne and Co, said that on March 18 she was serving in the mantle department. During the afternoon a woman came in and purchased three coats valued at £2l. She said that if the coats were not returned by the following day they' wgre to be c harged to Mrs W. Barnett, Harakeko Street, Riccarton. Ballantynes had a customer of that name and the goods were supplied. Catherine Payton, a second-hand dealer carrying on business at 108, Oxford Terrace, said during the last six months she had a customer named Scott calling at the shop on several occasions. The accused was the woman whom she knew as Scott. She sold ladies’ goods to witness on several occasions. She had known accused by three different names, but ip the last five years by the name of Scott. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed.
