AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT LINE. The building of three motor ships for the Australian Commonwealth Line is mooted in shipping circles. These vessels, it is suggested, would supplement the five “Bay” liners already in commission, which have been busily engaged during- the last four years with eminently satisfactory results. The report of the controlling board will, it is expected, when submitted to the Federal Cabinet On the return from abroad of the chairman (Mr Larkin), embody particulars advocating the construction of the rieiv vessels. It lias been recognised for some time by those intimately concerned with the affairs of the line that the addition of new tonnage would mean a great advantage on its present working conditions. They emphasise tho restrictions necessarily attendant upon having only five first-class steamers with which to maintain- .an efficient passenger and cargo service between Australia and the United Kingdom. The “Bay” liners lately have been attracting satisfactory numbers of passengers, and as much cargo as they can lift. To date, however, it lias been possible to maintain only a monthly If the construction of the motor ships is recommended to the Federal Cabinet, it is likely that early delivery of the new vessels will be made a special point. Costs, of course, will be a big factor in deciding where they shall be built. TRANS-PACIFIC SERVICE.
