MOTHERS’ UNION.

A special meeting of the Council of the Mothers’ Union was held at Church House on Friday last, forty branches being represented. Mrs W. G Roberts, diocesan president, presided. and explained that the object of the meeting was to consider a resolution relative to the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill. Mrs Roberts proposed and Mrs Carrington seconded the following resolution:—“That the Canterbury branch of the Mothers’ Union desires to reaffirm the resolution passed at a council meeting held on May 27, 1924. to the effect that the Canterbury Mothers’ Union, representing 1650 members, heartily approves of the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill, and asks you (Canterbury members of Parliament) to support its passage through the House when it appears before Parliament.”

An amendment was proposed asking that the matter be deferred to give more time for consideration.

The amendment was lost by a large majority, and the resolution was carried by forty-seven votes to five.
