CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK

ANZAC DAY, Anzac Day was observed in Sumner last Sunday in a spirit that did the borough credit. The united service in the Town Hall was attended by' nearly four hundred residents and was most impressive. ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH. The Rev E. C. W. Powell presided over the annual meeting. Mr E. G. Wood, people’s warden presented tile annual report and balance sheet. There wa's a credit of £36 8s 7d; the new church fund stood at £22 6s, Sd and the -furnishing fund at £23. The vicar stated that the attendances at the services had been pleasing especially -those at, the early morning services. This was jubilee year and all must make it a time of help and and blessing: He particularly thanked Mr E. G. Wood and -Mr O. Benjamin for their work as wardens. The following vestry was elected:— Messrs F. T. ‘Eldridge. I. F. Buxton, M. B. Crawford; F. H. Mathews, J. King, 11. L. Wiggins, W. J. Sim, J. A. Poulton. A. J. vScott and C. Aiken. Mr E. G. Wood was re-elected people’s warden. The following social committee was elected:— Mesdames C. Benjamin. W. C. Collins, .H. Richards, 11. L. Wiggins. E. C. W. Powell, J. T; Buxton, J. King. F; IT. Mathews, W. J. Sim. i F. Barber, C. X. Forrest and Miss Deacon. JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. Celebrations connected with the Jubilee of the Sumner District High School- were begun on Thursday afternoon when the school was thrown open to inspection. A number of parents and old. scholars availed themselves of the. opportunities offered, amongst them being Mr G. Orr of Wellington. In the evening the Old Scholars .As-

sociation held their first annual ball at the Town Hall. The function was a great success and reflects great credit upon the local committee that managed SUMNER PLUNKET SOCIETY. The Mayoress (Mrs W. 11. Nicholson) presided over an excellent attendance at the annual meeting of the Plunket Society. Nurse Wilson reported upon a successful year’s work and Mrs Godbyy of Christchurch, briefly' addressed the gathering.. The Mayoress presented the retiring president (Mrs Pascoe) with a beautiful Indian vase as a memento of her two years’ work. SHAG ROCK CORNER. The dangerous corner a,t Shag Rock is being severely dealt with. Heavy

blasting has been commenced and tons of rock brought down. LADIES’ RIFLE CLUB. The ladies’ third shoot of the season was held on Tuesday evening. There , was a good attendance, which included | several new members, who are making satisfactory progress. The best scores were as follows:—Miss Merry 31, Miss Dailey 30. Mrs A. Partridge 29. FIRST ANNUAL BALL. The- Old - Scholars’ Association held it’s first annual ball on Thursday evening in the Town Hall. With the spirit of- the school jubilee behind, the function was a huge success. On no occasion has . the -ballroom been decorated to better effect. With a main scheme of black and gold, the design included a huge dome of gold brilliantly lit in the centre of the room. From this a i canopy of streamers radiated in all di- ■ fections except towards the stage, where a break was left to show up the ‘clever moon and star decorations on a black background. Huge yellow balloons *were. suspended in front of the stage, while smaller ones in bright coli ours alternated with loops of gold | round the edge of the dome. The walls and stage were set oft with pretty greenery effects and the supper room was a delight. The lights were delicate- • ly shaded by soft daffodil bells and the

footlights were mantled with smaller domes picked out in black. The music of Marston’s Orchestra was specially good and the large attendance enjoyed a memorable evening. During the evening the president of the association (Mr G. F. Allen) specially thanked “the class” for its excellent attendance and congratulated the local committee upon achieving such a distinct success. PERSONAL. The Rev A. L. and Mrs Ash, late of Melbourne, who have been staving with the Rev W. and Mrs M Ara,' left on Monday for U.S.AMiss llift'e Lawrence has returned to Sumner. Mr G. A. Alexander received a very hearty vote of thanks from the householders at Monday night’s meeting, for J his services on the school committee ex- | tending over a period of eleven years. | Mr Jerand, of Palmerston North, has been visiting friends in Sumner. Mr W. F. Raphael was accorded a very hearty send-otf .by the, bowlers on Tuesday evening. He was presnted with a fine set of bowls and was asked to accept for Mrs Raphael a handsome manicure set. Mr C. Ogier, after a lengthy connection with the firm of J. D. Lawrence, has accepted a position with W. R. Cook and Son, Christchurch.
