PAPANUI PARAGRAPHS

NEWS OF THE DISTRICT

By our Special Correspondent

WAIMAIRI SCHOOL ELECTIONS. There was not a very good attendance at the annual meeting of householders on Monday night. Mr S. R. Webb was voted to the chair. The committee's report showed that the school had gone hack .in number of pupils by 18, but that the reports •’ of the inspectors through the year were invariably first class. The picnic and prize-giving had been enjoyable functions. The work of levelling the school grounds had been done by daylabour, and 990 yards of asphalt had been laid. Mr Webb congratulated the committee on the improved playground. Mr J. Ivory brought up the question of the recently-laid foundation stone. He pointed out that it gave the impression of being the foundation of the building instead of merely the additions. He thought the stone should commemorate the founding of the school, and the name of the first chairman of the School Committee should be the name inscribed. The honour was due to the hard work of the people who first secured the main building; Mr T. Holmes, last year's

chairman, described the incident as an attack on himself. If they wanted to they could take his name off. The names of those nominated were then read and declared elected, and on the motion of Mr Wood, seconded by Mr Moore, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring committee and its, chairman. NOTES. In the report of St Joseph's School picnic this item was omitted: The halfmile cycle race was won by James Ilighsted, with Leo M’Entee ahd Paul Gorinski dead heat in second place. Mrs Ilall, librarian of the Papanui Library, purchased 100 new books last week. They will be put on the shelves each night in sections, so that all mayhave a chance of securing one. TENNIS. Two finals have been reached in the handicap events at St Paul's. Tn the combined doubles M'Millan and Miss E. Ward beat Murray (owe 30 2-6) and, Miss F. M’Donald, 9-8. This was an interesting game. The former led S-5, but Murray and Miss M'Donald brought the score to 8 all, 30 all, only' to dose the next two strokes. The final, was played against Burrell and Mrs Burrell (owe 15), who led 5-0, but M’Millan and Miss Ward, after a good I game, won 9-7. In the final of the men's singles, H. j Tinman (owe 30 2-6) beat P. Rigby (scr) after a long game. In the ladies' singles two semi-finals have been played. Miss Morgan (rec, 15,2-6) beat Mrs Burrell (owe 15 2-6), 9-8. and Miss F. M'Donald (sor) beat Mrs Baynes (owe 15), 9-1. The final of the ladies’ doubles will probably- be plaved on Saturdav. It lies between Mrs M’Auley- and Miss Bowbyes (owe : 15 4-6) and Misses Tail and F. M'Donald (owe 2-6 h PERSONAL. Mrs H. L. Blamires and Miss Blamir.es returned this week from a short holiday spent in Dunedin. Mr G. Adair. Matson’s Road, is on a business visit to Dunedin, accompanied by- Mr Johansen (Sy-dney). Frank Grose won the fourteen-mile Derby championship, and blue ribbon .

at the ITalswell Cycle Club sports. ’ The Rev H. L. Blamires, Papanui.'s j- new minister, is likely to be very I popular. lie is the only Methodist ! minister now alive who was on Gallii poli. Apart from that he will be ! popular as an athlete. lie was captain of the Hawke's Bay cricket team that play'ed the 1911 Australian team that included Trumper, Collins, Armstrong. etc., and a bat autographed by ! the Australian team is an interesting souvenir he possesses. During the ; past few years, being stationed at Nelson, his cricket has been confined II to the Hawke Cup matches, and. foi the season just past, in senior cups matches in Nelson, he -has the fine bowling average of 32 wickets for 7.9 runs Recently he has played golf in the winter, and last winter (his first season) he won the Nelson Easter bogey tournament. A n< l he also plays a good game of tennis. THE. FIFTHS. Last Saturday night saw. at the Gaiety r Ilall, a record crowd of dancers. It was the “Fifths” most successful, dance. Miss F. Fantham won the handsome box of chocolates presented by Mr T. Poison, for the lucky spot waltz. A monster dance will be held in the Drill Hall, Kaiapoi, shortly-, and the committee are arranging for ,A midnight train back from Kaiapoi, and a ’bus from Papanui there. FOOTBALL. j The senior team was extended last Saturday to hold their own against Sydenham, and they will have to improve in combination. The junior team was unlucky to be beaten by , Sydenham. If all the team were on the field 1 when the whistle blew the scores would have been reversed. The fifth grade were all out against Marists, and won comfortably. The sixth grade lads played very creditably considering their first time out. A NEW INDUSTRY. On Thursday-, on North Road, a start was made with the erection of. the buildings that are to be the future home of the British Building Block Coy., Ltd. This form of hollow concrete building block has revolutionised building in the old world. Mr T. H. Clough, well known to Papanui, is manager, and at his office, 77, Hereford Street, he will be only too glad to answer inquiries. To the Editor.' i Sir,--The electric tight on Ilarewood Road at the end of Matson’s Road is bacliy placed, as it does not light Matson's Road. To a certain extent, the trouble is caused by' some trees that overhang the footpath on the corner. but if the light was shifted half a chain further west, these would not matter so much. I have written to the City Council, but so far nothing has been done.—Yours, etc., W. BREACH.
