TTO USE 1101. DE R> M E ETING. The annual meeting: of the New "Brighton householders was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Mr J. Buxton presided over a record meeting of about liu residents. Before proceedings with the annual report and balance-sheet, the meeting placed on record their deepest sympathy with his Worship the Mayor. Mr T. Gamble, in his great loss: also their appreciation of the late Mrs Gamble’s valuable assistance. given ungrudgingly at all time's. The report referred in particular to the excellent standard of health maintained: the very satisfactory' progress made by scholars and the good results obtained by the teaching staff. The roll numbers were: Main School 61G. South 60. it was decided that the matter of a dental clinic for the school be referred to the incoming committee. A vote of appreciation was carried to Mr A. E. Langford for his work on the committee during the past eight years. Mr Langford did not seek re-election. Thirteen residents stood for the committee election and the following nine were elected: —Mesdames T. Bellamy and M. Moses. Messrs H. A. Glasson. J. Buxton. A. \Y. Dunkley. J. Orsborn, P. Nelson. T. Robins and A. E. La wry. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr H. A- Glasson was apopinted > chairman. The committee decided to employ an outside secretary, and Mr S. Thompson was appointed to the position. Messrs Buxton. Robins and Orsborn were appointed Grounds Com- i rrittee for the ensuing year. SEA WALLS The council, has been advised by the j Public Works Engineer to proceed with j the erection of the new sea walls. A j conference will be he’d on Monday j evening between representatives of the j two local surf clubs and the council to j discuss the plans of the wall. LADIES* MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. This week's shoot of the Ladies’ Club I was held on Wednesday. Gillcs and Parsons, and ! Messrs Seales, Stokes and Stapleton. | PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. At the Presbyterian Church last Sunday a parade of the Girl Guides and the fourth New Brighton Troop of Scouts was held. The Rev J. S. Young conducted the service and preached on “The Mystery of Suffering and the Mystery of Providence" as illustrated in the experience of the Anzac soldiers. Scout Bert Goodland read the lesson. residents is extended to the relatives . of the late Mr X. Early, [ Mr and Miss M’Glelland, Keppel 1 Street, are expected back from Sydney ■ next week. ;- SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. ; The New Brighton School Committee held another ettehre party in the South Brighton Mall last Wednesday evening, to endeavour to further augment their funds towards purchasing a piano lor South Brighton School. The prize'-win-ners were Mrs Robins, Miss Bell MY lintcck, and Messrs Sherwood and R. Campbell; consolation prizes, Mrs Grammar and Mr J. Wilson.

BAD ROADS. ■ The bad conditions of seme .he roads in Xew Brighton and cn route to the borough, including the tram track, has already been mentioned in these notes. Unfortunately no. improvement has so far been made. A visiting motorist gave his opinion of the roads to New Brighton in the “Lyttelton Times" during th? past week, and contrasts the splendid condition of Wainoni Road with the condition !of Page's Road. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. | North Beach residents upheld their reputation for interest in local affairs, |by their attendance at the annual meeting of householders, on Monday evening. The report for the past vear showed a substantial increase in the roll number of the school! Many improvements have been effected in the school and surOundings. W-C.T.U. On Thursday afterneon a meeting was held at the residence of Mrs C: Dixon. North Brighton, for the purpose of forming a branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mrs Hall (president of the New Brighton branch of the W.c.T.U.) presided and gave an outline of the work of the organisation. Miss B. Harband also spoke and moved the following resolution : "That the. time has arrived when a branch of the W.C.T,.U, should be formed in North Brighton." The motion was carried. tives of the New Brighton and the North Beach Surf Clubs, the Borough Council, and the Public Works trict Engineer was held on Tuesday. The Surf Club and the Council representatives will meet on Monday evening and report to the next meeting ■of the Borough Council. X EW. BRIGHTON BRIDGE. It is a matter for regret that no tender has been accepted for the erection of the long-looked for and much needed bridge in place of the present tram bridge at Sea View Road. OFFEND I X G CY < : LIS TS . Tn spite of recent prosecution by the local police, there, are still too many cyclists guilty of riding on the footpath and without lights or reflectors. GALA DANCE. The Gala Society dance on Thursday evening in the Pier Memorial Ilall was well attended, and those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The committee asked those present for an expression of opinion at to whether future dances should be held on Thursday or Saturday evenings. The vote was

almost unanimous in favour of Thursday. ■ CHURCH SERVICE. The service at the North Brighton School on Sunday evening will be conducted by the Anglican Church. The preacher will be Rev Hamilton. PERSONAL. 1 The Rev W. F. Knowles was unable j to attend the annual meeting of houseI holders at the school on Monday evening owing to illness. Mrs B. J. M’Kenna, of Palmer's Road, is visiting Dunedin. Mrs Bennett, of Bexley, left for Dunedin on Friday*. Mr Barclay Alabaster, of Timaru, visited his parents. Mr and Mrs J. C. Alabaster, of Osborne Terrace, during the last week-end.
